Sharing the Goodness of Christ with the nations

Tithing and the Blessings that follow Obedience

About 2 Years ago I lost my job, and for 4 months I could not pay my rent. I struggled and by the end of the 4th month I could not even reach half of what was due every month. The enemy stole from me. I tried during that time of unemployment to create ways of generating an income but I never got past R350 a month for more that 5 months. After being asked to leave the premises I managed to get a temporary place to stay, and it was during that time I remember sitting outside on the wall and my girlfriends place, feeling bruised, feeling like a complete failure, ego trampled on, ‘coz here I am, the man in the relationship, and I cannot even offer the love of my life a chocolate… and I remember sitting there with my head in my hands, expressing my pain, my heart and my anger at God saying: “what now God, I have nothing to show, I have nothing. My house was taken from me, I have people looking at me as if I am a failure, all my confidence went down the drain!!!!! why, why, why did this happen, and why have you allowed this”.
Obviously I knew God did not have a hand in this, for I know the enemy is the thief, and the enemy is out to destroy (what better way to steal your money)(John 10:10), but I know that God does not mind us blowing off some steam from time to time, it’s called a relationship. We got to be real with God.
I remember clearly saying this: “God, even though I am upset and angry now, (I really was) I know without a doubt that this will eventually pass and I will still be praising you a year from now. Even now in the midst of this I will praise you, because I love you. I will love you even if I have nothing”. After my conversation with God, suddenly a peace came over me and I went inside. But after that, something amazing started happening in my life. God started sharing the principle of Tithing with me, and I made a decision to start tithing, even though I just-just saw R350 a month at the time. I would come into my church every month and give 10% of all my income. And what I found was that with every tithe, I would sense a breakthrough, and even though I did not see it right away I knew a delivery truck was on it’s way, as if you went and bought a piece of furniture on credit and gone home, it does not mean that when you get home and not see it there you did not buy it, because you know it is still on it’s way via delivery. But even though you do not yet see it in your lounge, you know without a doubt that you already have it, you have rights to it and you sowed a financial seed in getting that furniture. Keeping that in mind I also learned that even though we sow, we can create our own delays in the delivery process (doubt). I mean you have to believe the truck is on its way or else you will not be waiting at home ready to receive it when it gets there.
Anyway, this went on for about 6 months. When one day I was lead to a newspaper add for a job vacancy. I applied for the position, and within 20mins they called me back for an interview. 2 weeks later I started my new job.
6 Months later I was blessed with salary surpassing all my previous salaries, the new apartment God blessed me with was 3 times what my previous apartment cost me, my tithe was now more than half of my previous apartment’s rent, and I was blessed by God to sow into ministries, and missions during That year giving seeds more that what my rent had cost me previously. And after 5 months God even blessed me with an increase.
You see, what God showed me is this… God does not need our money; I mean He created the heavens and the earth (Psa. 24:1). The Word tells us that in heaven, there is so much gold, they even use gold to pave the roads and walkways. What brought my breakthrough is this, I realized that there is a reason that God wants us to give 10% of our income to Him, and it is not because He needs more money, but it is because He knew in His infinite wisdom, that we will need as much help as we can get down here in regards to finances. And what He did was, he created a system called Tithing. It is heavens investment policy/ bank, governed by God, who gives a X10 fold increase for every deposit you make of 10%.
I believe that we as Christians can all live in financial prosperity, but we need to understand, that keeping our tithes from God, is stealing from God (Malachi 3:8–10), and that simply opens up the door for the devourer to come in and eat your blessings, and suddenly it is as if the holes in your pockets start growing and you do not know where it all goes, but if you allow God to expand your tithe:
One of the unexpected benefits of tithing is that it gives you divine protection, shielding you (and your finances) from many of the negative aspects of life, and the attacks from the enemy. It gives you greater financial wisdom.
You may expect to receive ten to a hundredfold increase in your supply. This is the Word of God!! One of the reasons may be, by tithing, you establish a divine financial partnership with the Source in which God is your senior Partner, and His resources are infinite. This activity seems to have a multiplying effect.
We cannot out-give God! And you couldn’t ask for a better “financial connection.” God never fails. He never has and never will. If you are not already doing so, the most advantageous thing you can do is to tithe.
Lastly I would like to end with this… God was not kidding when it came to tithing, He was very serious – how do I know this? :

Malachi 3:10 :Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.

This is the only area in which God directly tells us to challenge Him; invest in Christ’s people by sowing your seed–your tithe–into strong Christian ministries and be a cheerful giver!
There is a super-natural power that accompanies your tithe – when you give with a cheerful heart in obedience to God’s Word – you release and allow the acceleration and Blessing of heaven to fall on your finances.
God loves a cheerful giver and will always give seed to the sower.
God is ready to change your financial situation, but are you ready to trust Him with your fanances?
God id faithfull to His Word, and would not have created, or putt enphasis on tithing if it did not work, or if the truth about tithing had no power to it!
Be blessed and I hope you are encouraged

  2. Well said. That is the only way to break poverty over your life. He said he will rebuke the devourer for your sake in Malachi 3:11.

    Thank you for sharing Tony

  3. Quite a nice story and one very many people myself included can relate to. However, I felt a little uneasy when you began to include tithing into the entire mix. I am not trying to rain on your parade but I would like to say a thing or two.

Do you think that if you had not tithed, God would not have come through for you? Then this certainly makes God no different from all other pagan gods who require one thing or the other from their worshippers before they move on their behalf. We both know our God is not like that.

Attributing success, breakthrough and all the like to tithing is a very ugly trend that has really enveloped the church. Tithing seems to take preeminence over the blood and sacrifice of Jesus. The covenant established in that blood is being trampled under foot and treated as an unholy thing.

You are God’s son and no good thing would He withhold from you. He certainly would not require your tithes to make this come to pass. And remember that all things works together for our good and there is a purpose for everything. There was a reason your were unemployed all those months and God would still have come through for you if you did not tithe.

Time would not permit me to go into details but the New Testament church has not been given the command to tithe. We are children of the kingdom, totally set free from the law and ushered into grace. And when it comes to giving, give what you are happy with, without wanting to manipulate God through some form of tithing. And 2 Cor 9 tells us that anything we give is acceptable as far as we give it willingly and cheerfully. It never tells us it has to be a minimum of 10% before it would be accepted.

    God bless.

    • Hi Tony

Thanks for the read and for commenting. I know that God would come through for me ragrdless of whether I tithed or not, and nothing can possibly take preminience over the blood and sacrifice of Jesus, and even though I do agree that some do for some reason try to manipulate God with their tithing, or even try to impress God with it, however, this is not what I was implying.

You see Tony, I understand the grace of God, I know that He came to fullfill the law, but I do however believe in tithing. I also know that some churched do not preach or teach tithing but that is okay (as you said: Do you think that if you had not tithed, God would not have come through for you? of course He will), but I believe (personally), that tithing is non-negotiable, but that when you feel to sow as an offering, do so according to what you feel led to give and do it cheerfully and willingly. Sowing a seed with a bad attitude is like throwing your seed on tar. I do not just tithe or sow an offering simply for the sake of doing it, but by the revelation I received on both tithing and sowing, and I have personaly seen the difference in my life and finances due to those revelations. I do not do it because I must, I now do it because I want to.

Personally God had to teach me a valuable princilpe- not because He could not or did not want to bless me if I did not tithe (He is WAY to awesome for that, and way too loving), but so that I can open up wells in my life- for I had to break something over my me.

The best way to break poverty over your life – GIVE.

      Bless You Tony.
